Introduction

Japanese
はるか昔 山と森にかこまれた美しき ハイラルの大地

全知全能の力を持つ黄金がこの地方のどこかにあると伝えられていました

English
Long ago, surrounded by mountains and forests, there was the beauteous land of Hyrule... In this region, the existence of gold possessing powers of omniscience and omnipotence was passed down.
  • Adjectives end with -き in old Japanese (美しき)

Japanese
そのハイラルの王国で黄金がかくされた聖地への入口みつかり

多くの人々があらそって聖地へと消えていきました

しかし 戻ってきたはなく

また、悪しき力がそこからわきでてきたと言うことです

English
In the kingdom of Hyrule, the entrance to the holy land where the gold was hidden was found and...

Many people fought over it, vanishing into the holy land.

However, no one returned.

And, evil power came surging forth from there.
  • へと expresses a resultant state following a previous action.
  • と言うことです means the account is not firsthand.

Japanese
そこで 国の王は7人賢者命じ聖地への入口を封印させたそうです

封印は 2度と解かれる事はないはずでした

……しかし、それらのでき事伝説となったころ

English
At that point, the king ordered seven wise men to seal the entrance to the holy land.

The seal should never again have been released.

...however, when those events had become but legend...
  • でき事 = 出来事 (event), in case you're having trouble glossing w/ Rikaichan.
  • となる is similar to になる, but has the nuance that emphasizes the apparent finality of the resultant state.
Japanese
ここに、封印をとこうとたくらむナゾ司祭アグニムがいました。彼は国王ほうむり…。

達をあやつって7賢者の血をひく達を、つぎつぎイケニエささげていったのです。

English
The mysterious priest Agahnim plotted then to release the seal. He disposed of the king and... Manipulating the soldiers of the castle, he gave as sacrifices maiden after maiden from the bloodline of the Seven Sages.
  • In this context, ここに means "at that time."
  • In the case of とこうとたくらむ, the particle と is quoting とこう to express that Agahnim was plotting the intention to release the seal. This is similar to とこうと思う (intend to untangle/dissolve/release).
  • 血をひく means descendant. A more literal translation would be "from (someone)'s bloodline."

Japanese
そして、王女ゼルダがイケニエにささげられる運命の時も、もうそこまでせまっていました
English
And even the fateful time when Princess Zelda would be given as a sacrifice had already drawn so near.

Game Start to End of Hyrule Castle Dungeon

Zelda speaks in Link's sleep:

Zelda

Japanese
たすけて… … たすけてください… 私は、お城の地下ろう捕えられています。

私の名前はゼルダ…… 6人イケニエが ささげられ 私が さいごの1人… 城にやって来た司祭アグニムはイケニエを使い、7賢者の封印再び開こうとしています。 私は、お城の地下ろうの中… たすけて… …

English
Help me...help me please...I'm being held in the castle's basement...

My name is Zelda... Out of the 6 who were sacrificed, I am the last one... The priest Agahnim who came to the castle tries to open up the seal of the seven sages again by using ritual sacrifices.

I'm in the castle dungeon... help me...

Link's uncle

Japanese
リンク、わしはちょっと出かけてくる。心配する事はない。

までには戻ってくる。家を出るんじゃないぞ。

English
Link, I'm going out for a bit. There is nothing to worry about. I'll be back by morning. Don't leave the house.
  • わし is a male first person pronoun preferably used by old men. You shouldn't use this unless you want to sound like an old geezer.
  • ぞ at the end of a sentence adds force or can indicate a command. Preferably used by males.

Link gets the lantern:

Japanese
カンテラを 手に入れた

Yボタンでとうろうにをつけれるぞ!

English
You got the lantern! You can light torches with the Y button!
  • カンテラ is borrowed from the dutch "kandelaar."
  • つけれる -> the ら is sometimes dropped from -られる in the potential form in conversational Japanese, but it is not regarded as grammatically correct.

Link is out of magic power:

Japanese
あっ魔法の力が足りないこのままでは、このアイテムは使えないぞ!
English
Ah! You don't have enough magic power! You can't use this item in such a state.

Link meets some guards near the castle:

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
子どもが 夜ふけウロウロしてるんじゃない! 大人になってからだよ。
English
Children shouldn't go wandering around late at night! Wait until you're an adult.
  • 大人になってから is the stock expression for telling a kid to wait until they're older. For example, たばこは大人になってから, "You can smoke tobacco when you're an adult."

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
迷ったらXボタンPUSH

地図見れるぜ … … お前 知ってるかい?

English
If you get lost, push the X button. A map becomes visible... or did you know that already?
  • かい at the sentence end indicates a question usually answered with Yes or No
  • ぜ at the end of a sentence has the same function like ぞ. Adds force or can indicate a command. Preferably used by males.

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
物にさわってAボタンを押す。物が、かつげたりするぜ … お前 知ってるかい?
English
When an object is in your way, press the A button. You can carry the object... or did you know that already?
  • たり used with verbs can indicate that this is but one of many things you can do. Literally it means something like 'you can do such things as... (but possibly it can do some other things as well)'. So in this case it means the A Button can be used to lift up objects among other things like grabbing and pulling an object, etc.

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
お前が 剣を手にしたは Bボタンで 使うんだぞ … お前 忘れるなよっ!
English
When you have a sword in your hand, you can use it with the B button. Do not forget it!

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
地図光るは たぶん 目的地だ … … お前 知ってるかい?
English
The shining mark on your map is probably your destination... or did you know that already?

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
宝箱でAボタンを押す。宝箱が、開くはずだ。お前 知ってるかい?
English
Push the A button in front of treasure chests. The chest should open. Or did you know that already?

Guards at beginning of game

Japanese
おれ達と話すと 色々わかってタメになるぞ … お前 知ってるだろ!
English
Talking to us is good for understanding various things. But you probably already knew that!
  • ためになる = to be good for something
  • 々 is a repetition letter used for kanji. So 色々 is the same as 色色.

Link meets the guard at the castle gate:

Castle guard

Japanese
こら こら 城へは入れんぞ

子どもは 早く帰ってねなさい

English
Hey, hey, you can't go in the castle. Run on home and go to bed, kid!

Link reads a sign on his way to the dungeon:

Japanese
賢者血をひくみつけたには、ほうびとして100ルピーとらせる 国王
English
100 Rupies reward to the person who can find the maidens who are blood-kin of the 7 sages. -King

Zelda speaks as Link makes his way to the dungeon:

Zelda

Japanese
たすけてください… 私は お城の地下ろうに 捕えられています。

お城のまわりから、中庭通じる抜けがあるはずよ。

English
Help me please... I'm being held in the castle dungeon. Around the castle perimeter, there should be a hole leading to the courtyard.

Link meets his uncle in the secret passage:

Link's uncle

Japanese
うう…。リンク、お前だけはまきこみたくなかった…家を出るなと言ったのに…

…こ、この剣とを持って行け

よくきけ…Bボタンを押し続け

剣に力をためるのだ。

そうすれば、ある一族だけに伝わる秘剣が使えるはずだ…。リンクよ、お前ならできる…

ゼルダ姫を お救いするのだ。お、お前は、姫の … …。

English
Oog... Link, I didn't want you to get involved. I told you not to leave the house.

T-take this sword and shield.

Listen well... Press and hold the B button. It will save up energy in your sword.

Doing this, you should be able to use a secret sword technique that was handed down only by a certain family. Link, you can do it...

Rescue Princess Zelda. Y-you're the princess's....
  • だけ generally means "only" or "alone". Here, it means "of all people, especially you".
  • "Link, you alone I didn't want to get involved in this."
  • のに literally means "even though", and is often used used after a past-tense form to show regret that something you prepared for didn't go as you had planned. This construction is often preceded by the word "せっかく".
  • Ex: 「せっかく洗濯物を干したのに...」 "and I just put out the laundry" (said when it starts raining suddenly).
  • Note that the term 一族 is more used in a sense of lineage. 家族 and 家庭 are more regular terms when addressing your family(mother, father and siblings etc.).
  • The なら emphasizes the subject: you can do it (but other people might not be able to).
  • At this point, your uncle apparently dies.

Link gets the map:

Japanese
MAPを 手に入れた!XボタンをPUSHすると現在地全体がわかるはずだ!
English
You got the map! If you push the X button, you'll know your current location and the layout of the whole area!

Link gets the boomerang:

Japanese
ブーメランだ!STARTボタンで、選んで使ってみよう!
English
It's a boomerang! Select it with the start button and give it a try!

Link gets the big key:

Japanese
大きなカギを 手に入れた。小さなカギでは 開かないジョウ前を開く事ができるぞ!
English
You got the big key. It can open locks you couldn't open before with small keys.

Link rescues the princess:

Zelda

Japanese
ありがとう リンク

あなたが 近づいてくるのを 感じていたわ。

リンク よくきいて この城のたちは、みんな 司祭アグニムの、魔術に あやつられているの。お父様は、たぶん もう …

司祭は、人間ではないわ! い力を持った悪魔よ! … … …

ねえ ちゃんときこえましたか

  • うん
  • ぜんぜん
English
Thanks Link. I felt you approaching.

Listen well, Link. These castle guards, every one of them is being manipulated with black magic by the priest Agahnim. My father probably is too...

The priest isn't human! He is a devil with strong power!

Did you hear this properly?

  • Yes
  • Not at all
  • Take note that Zelda tends to end her sentences with わ occasionally. It indicates emotion and emphasis. Furthermore it is considered a female term, so don't replicate this if you are male otherwise you will sound girlish.
  • お父様 uses both the honorific prefix お and the suffix さま. さま is a highly honorific suffix. When used on titles and persons it can carrie a subliminal meaning of worhsip and devotion. Zelda is using it for her father because he is also the King of Hyrule, obviously. お父さん with the polite but more neutral さん suffix would be the more regular term to address your father.
  • 悪魔 literally means devil and often relates to Satan. However in Japanese every person doing horrendous evil deeds can be labeled with that term.

Zelda

Japanese
じゃあ、司祭に気づかれる前に 急いで逃げましょう! 私 秘密抜け道を知ってるの

とにかく、1Fのホールまで 私を連れて行って。さあ、急いで…。

English
Well, let's quickly run away before we are noticed by the priest! I know a secret passage. Anyways, bring me up to the 1F hall. Now, let's hurry...
  • 抜け道 literally translates as bypath or a way out of something. 抜ける = 'to lead out, to come out' and 道 = path, road

Link escorts the princess to the 1F hall...

Zelda

Japanese
お父様の部屋から教会抜ける 通路があるわ。神父様はきっと 私達の力になってくれるわ。
English
From my father's room, there is a hallway that we can escape to the church. Surely the priest will give us our power.
  • The kanji for priest here 神父 are different than those used for Aghanim 司祭. The meaning is the same. Except that 神父 is literally "god-father" and therefore has a connotation of "good" as opposed to Aghanim, who is evil. 司祭 literally means Conductor of Rituals. Which hints at Aghanims rituals in the game.
  • 力に成(な)って呉(く)れる's meaning is straightforward: "The priest will become our power." = "The priest('s actions) will become (=contribute) to our power." = "The priest will give us power."

In the throne room...

Zelda

Japanese
このかざりだなが開くはずよ。何かあかりはある? 中はまっくらで、何も見えないの。

よういが良ければ行きましょう

左側から押すといいわ。力をかして

English
This display case should open. Do you have some sort of light? It's so dark inside that you can't see anything.

If you're prepared, then let's go.

It will be good to push it from the left side. Lend me your power!

Halfway through the secret passage to the church...

Japanese
この水路をぬけてしまえば、教会まであとすこし…。気を付けて行きましょう。
English
If we go to the end of this waterway, it's a little farther to the church. Let's go on carefully.

Last room in the secret passage to the church...

Japanese
この先が、教会の中なの。この部屋のスイッチを引っぱるのよ。
English
After this is the inside of the church. Pull the switch in this room.

The correct switch...

Japanese
ここのレバーを引くのよ。Aボタンを押したまま十字ボタンを手前に入れてみて
English
Pull the lever here. With the A button pushed, put in the cross button in front of you.
  • まま indicates a state, ie "with the A button pushed".
  • TODO - Explanation needed - why is 入れて used here to mean "push"?

Link and Zelda meet the church priest:

Priest

Japanese
おお ゼルダ姫無事でしたか! リンク お前が助け出してくれたのですね。
English
Oh, Zelda, you're safe! Link, it was you who saved her, yes?

Zelda

Japanese
神父さま、本当に リンクの おかげです。司祭が 言ってました。

さいごのイケニエのお前をささげれば賢者の封印は開く』って… … …

ねえ リンク お願い! このハイラルのを 司祭なんかに わたさないで。

7賢者の封印が 解かれたら の力が どっとおしよせてくるわ。

その前に … … … その前に司祭を倒して

この国を守って! あなたなら きっとできる … あなたなら …

English
Abbot, this is really thanks to Link. The priest said this:

"If I use you, Zelda, as the final sacrifice then the seal of the sages will open."

Link, I beg of you! Please don't hand over Hyrule to the likes of the priest!

If the seal of the 7 sages is undone, an evil power will suddenly come forth.

Before then... Before then, take down the priest!

Protect this country! You are surely able to do it... Only you can...
  • Appending なんか to nouns or persons literally means 'something or someone like that'. When used on persons this can be considered derogatory.

Priest

English
Hmm, it seems that monsters are possessing the priest...

In order to defeat this guy, you will need the legendary sword that repels evil, the Master Sword.

I don't know the details, but it is rumored that the village elder is one of the descendants of the 7 sages.

First, it would be good to visit him... I'll add the mark to your map.

But be careful. Right now the castle guards should be out looking for you all.

I will shelter Princess Zelda here. Go without worry.

Did you hear this properly?

  • Yes
  • Not at all
  • Putting 様です on the end of a sentence, gives it the meaning of 'it seems like' or 'it appears to me (as if)'.
  • 彼奴(あやつ) is derived from 彼(あ), an old Japanese pronoun still seen in such words as あれ,あの,あいつ,あなた(あ+の+方)) and 奴(やつ), so the basic meaning is "that person", furthermore it is derogatory. It is basically a contraction of あのやつ.
  • 退 basic meaning is "retreat, move somebody out of the way" and 魔 means evil, so judging from the kanji, it means "sword that fends off evil".
  • と言う事です literally means "it is said that..." or "they say that...".
  • 探し回る (here rendered 探しまわる) is a combination of 探す, "to search", and 回る, "to go around" (often in the literal sense of "orbit", but sometimes in the more figurative sense of wandering). Hence, "to go around looking".
  • せず, from する, is formed by using 連用形 (continuous use form) of the classical negation of verbs with ず(ぬ). So it means "without doing". Thus, 心配せずに is "without worry".

Priest at Church

Japanese
村の長老に会いなさい。そしてマスターソードを手に入れることです。
English
Meet the village elder. Then obtain the Master Sword.
  • ことです is placed at the end of a present tense form to convey that some action is required. It sounds blunt and is often used to emphasize the action. See ことだ for reference (read the comments too).

Zelda at Church

Japanese
リンク 気を付けてね! ここで あなたの無事を お祈りしているわ!
English
Take care Link! I will be praying for your safety here!

Link gets a heart container (full):

Japanese
ハートのうつわをみつけた !ハートのレベルが1つあがった
English
You found a heart container! Your heart level has gone up one.

End of Hyrule Castle Dungeon to End of First Dungeon (Eastern Temple)

Link gets a piece of heart:

Japanese
ハートのかけらをみつけた !
English
You found a heart piece!

Link gets a piece of heart (every fourth piece):

Japanese
ハートのかけらみつけた !ハートレベルが1つあがった
English
You found a heart piece! Your heart level went up by one.

Sign north of fortune teller's house:

Japanese
きけん勝手にヘブラに入る事をきんしします。
English
Danger! Entering Mt. Hebra on your own is prohibited.
  • 勝手に means "behaving freely, as you want, not caring about how you are supposed to behave". It can also mean "to do something on your own accord".
  • Take note that ヘブラ山 uses the suffix for 山 since it is a place name. So it is pronounced ヘブラさん. There are many other nouns that have suffix or even prefix pronunciations for kanji, so watch out for this. A few examples on when to use and not use the suffix:
  • このは美しい。 "This mountain is beautiful."
  • へブラは美しい。 "Mount Hebra is beautiful."
  • へブラのは美しい。 "The Mount of Hebra is beautiful."

Sign near Lake Hylia:

Japanese

English

  • Like before ハイリア is a place name so it uses the suffix. See above for more details.

Fortune Teller (north of Kakariko Village)

Link doesn't have enough money:

Fortune Teller

Japanese
ううむ、きょうは、ちょうしが悪うございます。 またのおこしをまっておりますぞ。
English
Hmm, today I'm not feeling well. I'll be waiting for your return.
  • 悪うございます is correct Japanese. 悪し→悪く→悪う is a formal variation of adjectives when used with (で)御座る. Below are listed the change for adjectives whose stem ends on a (vowel) sound of

ア:早く→(お)早う,
イ:宜しく→宜しゅう,
ウ:悪く→悪う,
エ:There are no such adjectives. (Except 可し, I guess. Given certain sound changes, this *might become 可く→*びょう. Sounds funny, but that is only speculation.),
オ:重く→重う.

If Link has enough money...

Japanese
あっ、あなたのカオ良くないソウが出ておりますぞ・・・。

さ、さ、うらなってしんぜよう

やすくしときますよ・・・。

  • うらなってもらう
  • やめておく
English
Ah, your face is not looking well...

Say, I'll tell your fortune.

It will be cheap for you...

  • Have him tell your fortune
  • Pass up
  • しときます is the contraction of しておきます

If you ask him to tell it...

Japanese
ねあ~ん で~るた~る

まずは、長老サハスラーラを探しなされ~・・・。

English
It's coming to me now.... First of all, you must search for elder Sahasuraara~...
  • TODO - Needs better explanation of the first line and なされ. Might need a better translation.
Japanese
それでは 15ルピーいただきますぞ。では、あなたがゲンキになりますよ~に、ええいっ!
English
Well then, I'll be taking 15 rupees. Well then, I wish you well.
  • ~になりますように is a phrase meaning hoping, wishing or praying for something.

Woodcutters (North of church):

Woodcutter

Japanese
よう、リンク! このごろにもあやしいキリかかって

うかつに入れもしねェーや。

English
Hey, Link! These days even the forest is covered in this suspicious fog. Don't you go in there carelessly.

Woodcutter

Japanese
どうでもいいけど、このは、きりごたえおかしいなあ。それっ ギ~コ ギ~コ
English
Whatever the case, this tree reacts quite strange to our saw. It goes *squeak* *squeak*
  • The two woodcutters use a big two-man saw to cut down the tree.
  • きりごたえ has most likely an analogous meaning to 手応え; i.e., "the feeling while cutting" or something like this. This is a hint for the player later on when he can ram into the tree using the Pegasus Boots. This will reveal a hollow tree trunk leading to a secret area.
  • なあ or な used at the end of a sentence can be used to convey emphasis and emotion. This is usually a mens term and can be considered the male equivalent to わ which Zelda likes to use every now and then. Women using なあ can sound a little bit tomboyish. Be careful not to confuse this with the negating particle な following a verb which is meant as a prohibition. For example if someone yells at you "食べるな!" in a loud and anxious voice, then it is not good to go ahead and eat it. In this case however, it is quite clear since な is elongated using あ which let's you know that it is used to convey more emphasis.

Link can play the money-making game in the lost woods

Link tries to open a chest before paying:

Man

Japanese
にいちゃん、にいちゃん!ちゃんとルピーはらってから宝箱あけとくれよ!
English
Hey buddy, buddy! You have to pay rupees properly to open a chest!
  • にい means elder brother. However, you can use words like this to address strangers you don't have any family relations with too. In this case you would translate it different according to the current situation, the relations the characters are in and which kind of honorific prefixes and suffixes are used. This also depends on the age difference the two characters interacting with each other have. In this case "buddy" seems legit, since Link has no family relations to this man but is still addressed without honorific prefixes and with the more familiar ちゃん suffix.

Link speaks to the man:

Japanese
かけたルピーがふえるへる

100ルピーで1ぱつしょうぶ

あんた、やってみないかい? さあ、どうする?

  • しょうぶする
  • 逃げだす
English
Will the rupees you bet go up or down!?

A one-round game is 100 rupees.

Want to give it a try?

So, what will you do?

  • Play the game
  • Run away
  • あんた is the contraction of あなた and it is less polite. Using あんた to adress someone you are not familiar with can be considered derogatory.

Run away:

Japanese
そうかい・・・。残念だな。また、ルピーをためてよってくれよな。
English
Is that so.... Too bad. After you have saved up rupees, visit again.

Play the game:

Japanese
よしっ!好きな宝箱を開けてくれっ!
English
Alright! Open the chest you like!

Link talks to the man after the game, or tries to open a second chest:

Japanese
にいちゃん、宝箱はもう開けられないよ。それでおしまいだからな。
English
Buddy, you can't open anymore chests. That's because this is the end of the game.

Link picks up a fake master sword in the lost woods:

Japanese
やった! マスターソード…

 … … …では、ないだ。 ザンネン

English
Yes! The Master Sword ... Actually, it looks like it isn't. How disappointing.
  • やった is a quite common exclamation in Japanese to express cheer, success or a sense of accomplishment. It literally means "[You, We, I, etc.] did it"

Link meets a thief in the lost woods cave:

Thief

Japanese
やいこぞう。ここは、オレ盗賊一味かくれ家なんだぞ!かってに入らないでくれよ…。
English
Hey, young man. This is the thieves' hideout! Don't come as you please...
Japanese
は、かわるけど、オレ達なかまだったが、あやしサバク入口にいるんだってなあ
English
Although his speech has changed, the man who was our former mate is now at the entrance of the mysterious desert.

Link finds a mushroom in the lost woods:

Japanese
あまい 果物くさったようなかおりがするキノコだ…

Yボタンでわたせたりする

English
A mushroom that has the scent of sweet, rotting fruit.... You can give it to people with the Y button.
  • 渡せたり is 渡す→渡せる (potential) → 渡せたり. たり, phenomenologically formed by adding り to the た-past form, is used to indicate that a verb action is only one instance of what is actually done - ie a literal translation would be "You can do such things as giving it to people with the Y-Button." In this context, it bears some connotation of "(Try) doing such things as giving it to people...". たり can be used with multiple verbs, ie 食べたり飲んだりする, however, one must always conclude such a phrase with する.

English
Oh, if it isn't Link.

Did you need something from this old woman?

The elder? Ah, has been out of the house ever since the priest started gathering sacrifices.

... ... what? Master Sword? I don't remember much about it.

Before today, a long time ago, was a group of people called the Hylia who prospered and flourished.

In this land, it is said that numerous treasures were left behind by these people and concealed.

Of these (treasures) I have heard that the Master Sword was a blade forged especially for those who possess magical powers.

And even to this day, the sword is supposed to sleep quietly deep in the heart of the forest...

Did you hear this properly?

  • Yes
  • Not at all
  • や is Kansai-ben for だ. のう is Kansai-ben for な/ね.
  • しもうた is Kansai-ben for しまった. わすれてしもうた "I completely forgot".
  • くわしいこと means "the details" or "the particulars". "I completely forgot the particulars of the Master Sword."
Japanese
ともかく、長老を探しなされ。村の者の誰かが、あの人のいどころを知っておるはずじゃ。

はようみつかると良いがのう。リンクや、気を付けて行かれなさいよ…。

English
Anyhow, search for the elder. Someone here in the village should know about his whereabouts. It will be great if you found him quickly. When you go out, take care, Link.
  • はよう = はやく (Kansai-ben) This form can also be found in the standard Japanese expression お早う and 宜しゅうで御座る.

Hey Link, this house was once a hideout for a thief. What do you make of that...?
Japanese
そうそう、ブラインドとか言うの盗賊で、あかるい大キライだったらしいぜ。
English
That's right, the thief was called Blind or something like that and by the looks of it, he seemed to abhor bright and clean places.
  • ブラインド is probably a reference to the english word "blind". This guy is also the boss of the Thieves' Town Dungeon in the Dark World.
  • らしい here is used to express an assumption or conclusion made by looks and evidence. The house looks overall very dark and dirty.

Link gets bombs:

Japanese
バクダンを 手に入れた。おいたバクダンを Aボタンでかついで投げられるぞっ!
English
You got bombs. You can pick up and throw dropped bombs with the A button!

Second Row of Houses in Kakariko Village

Lady at house on left:

Japanese
あっ! おたずね者のリンクだ! へいたいの みなさぁ~ん
English
Ah! It's Link, the wanted man! Guards!!!
  • お尋ね者 is an old word that means "wanted", as in your face is on the wanted poster on the outside wall of a saloon.

Street Vendor

Japanese
なんでも入る 魔法のビンはいらないあるか?100ルピーでOKあるね。どうするあるよ?
  • か う
  • いらない
English
Do you need magic bottles that anything can be put in? It's yours for 100 rupees. What will you do?
  • Buy
  • Don't need it
  • TODO - better translation needed for 100ルピーでOKあるね。 Explanation needed for how the vendor uses ある.
  • I'm not 100% sure on this but I think the writers gave the vendor faulty Japanese on purpose to make him sound foreign. If you look at him in the game, he looks quite oriental and wears a turban. Especially the last part "どうするあるよ?" sounds completely off to me. He uses ある way too much and in totally inappropriate places grammar-wise. In any case, I would advice to NOT use any of his sentences as learning material.

If you say you don't need it...

Japanese
あいや~ ザンネンあるね。ルピー集めてまた 来るよろしね。
English
Ah, too bad. Gather rupees and come again.

If you buy it...

Japanese
おお ありがとさんね。おもいっきり アタマかかげるよろし!
English
Oh, thank you. Hold it above your head with all your might!
  • ありがとさん is ありがと (thanks) combined with さん, which is just a contraction of さま. Thus, it is an informal version of making certain expressions. Also more polite by adding さま. Also compare お疲れさま—お疲れさん.
  • よろし is a form of the adjective 宜しい. To be precise, it is the 終止形, and old conjugation base that only survives in certain expressions and phrases in modern Japanese.

System

Japanese
これは ビンだ。中に色々入れることができる。入れた物はあとで使えるぞ!
English
This is a bottle. You can put various things inside. You can use the things you put inside later!

After Link buys the bottle, he speaks to the seller again:

Japanese
もう ビンはうりきれたね。また 来るよろしね。 … … …
English
I am sold out of bottles already. Please come again.

Link releases a rare bee near the shopkeeper who sold him a bottle in Kakariko Village. When it touches him, he says:

Japanese
あいや~ これはめずらしいハチあるね。

100ルピーでかうあるよ。

English
Yah~ This is a rare bee. I will buy it for 100 rupees.

Link delivers a fish to the shopkeeper who sold him a bottle in Kakariko Village by throwing it at him:

Japanese
あいや~ さかなたべるにヨロシイあるよ。これと、かえっこするね。
English
Yah~ Fish are good for your health. TODO

Third Row of Houses in Kakariko Village

House on the right (Lots of bushes in front of the door):

Man

Japanese
やあ、リンク。 わざわざ、入りにくい家を訪ねてくれたね

おれいに良い事教えてあげよう

川上人目につかない所に、湖があって、そこにはゾーラが、うじゃうじゃしてるんだって。

そのゾーラたちの宝と言うのがこれがもう、XXXしい物らしいよ!でへへ、みてみたいよな

English
Hey Link. So, you've gone through the trouble of entering my home.

As thanks, I'll tell you something good.

At the upper reaches of the river, there is a lake that cannot be seen by human eyes. It's said that swarms of Zora are living there.

And about the treasure of these Zora, it already appears to be like *that. Hehe, I bet you wanna see it.
  • TODO — need to work わざわざ into the 1st line translation somehow. I added a slightly more free translation. Better sound effects for 4th line.

House 2nd from the right:

Boy

Japanese
ぼくは、体がよわくってそとに出られないんだ…。ゴホ ゴホ …

The evil presence of monsters flooding in from the mountains and forest got me. At least, that is what everyone is saying... *cough*

  • is a male first person pronoun preferably used by young boys or adolescents.

System

Japanese
ムシ取りあみを おかりした!ムシの他にも 取れる物があるかもしれない。秘密だ…。
English

English

Woman sweeping...Third row third house from the right.

Old Woman

Japanese
おお、リンクや。姫を連れさらったと言うウワサじゃが、ワシは、お前を信じとるよ。
English
Oh Link, it's you. There's a rumor going around that you have kidnapped the princess, but I believe in you.
  • 信じとる is just the contraction of 信じておる, although you can find とる itself in the dictionary. おる is the old pronunciation of いる and it is considered humble language. So basically 信じとる has the same meaning as 信じている. Furthermore, おる is often used to make characters sound old or ancient. For example, the Great Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time tends to use おる instead of いる.

A one-round game is 20 rupees.

Want to give it a try?

So, what will you do?

  • Play the game
  • Run away

If you play...

Japanese
よしっ!好きな宝箱を開けてくれっ!
English

Link meets Sahasuraara:

Japanese
いかにもワシ長老であり7賢者しそん1人サハスラーラじゃ。

 … … … なんと

リンクよ、おさないお前退魔を 求めておるのか!

じゃが あの誰でも使えるわけではのうてな。3匹魔物倒し3つ紋章手にした勇者』だけが使い手になれるとハイリアの伝えとる … … …

いどんでみるか?

  • うん
  • もちろん
English
Yes I am the elder, Sahasralah. One of the descendants of the 7 sages.

... ... ...What's that?

So a young lad like you (Link) is seeking the sword of Evil's Bane, eh?

Well, not just anybody can use that sword. Only a Hero who slays three monsters and has collected three crests can wield it, so the Hylian people say...

Take on the challenge?

  • Yes.
  • Of course!
  • いかにも means something like "Indeed" or "yes, that's right"
  • 紋章 is a "seal" or "crest", like a coat of arms
  • 使い手になれる: lit. "can become the wielder"
  • ~とる is a dialectal variant of ~ている. It's basically the contraction of ておる.
Japanese
よし、ならば、この神殿にある『勇気紋章』を手に入れることができるか?

みごと持ち帰ったならば、ワシの知っている教えてやろう

さあ、神殿へ行くが良い。

English
Very well. In that case, can you acquire the Crest of Courage that is in this temple?

If you bring it back here, I will tell you a story I know.

Well then, go to the temple.

Inside the first dungeon...

Note about dungeons: The items you get in each dungeon (map, compass, big key) will not be covered in each dungeon. The compass is new, so we'll cover that one now.

Japanese
コンパスを みつけた

 ボスの場所は これでばっちりだぜ!

English
You found the compass. This is perfect for finding the boss' location!

Link tries to open the big chest but doesn't have the key:

Japanese
ムムッ、カギがかかっている大きなカギがあれば、開けられそうだ!
English
Hm, it's locked. If you had the big key, it seems like it would open!

Link gets the bow:

Japanese
ユミを みつけた

  がうてるぞ!

 矢 がなくなるまでだぞっ!

English
You found the bow.

You can shoot arrows!

Until you don't have any more!

Triforce tile panel:

Japanese
リンクよ、ワシじゃ

長老サハスラーラじゃ。 お前に、助言あたえよう。 この神殿にあるは、かたいヨロイまとった魔物をも倒せるはずじゃ。必ずみつけなされ。

English
Link, it's me, Sahasuraara the elder. I'll give you advice. In this temple, there is a treasure that should be able to defeat even tough armor-clad monsters. Find it without fail.

Link gets the pendant:

Japanese
勇気紋章』を手に入れた

長老サハスラーラに見せるのだ

残りの紋章は、あと2つだ!

English
You got the crest of courage!

Show it to elder Sahasuraara.

There are two crests left!

End of First Dungeon to End of Second Dungeon (Desert Temple)

Link meets Sahasuraara again:

Japanese
おお、なんと『勇気紋章』を手に入れたか…。では、ワシの知っている話をしよう
English
Oh, what's that, did you get the Seal of Courage? Well then, I'll tell you what I know.

Japanese
その昔、ハイリアの王家を守る者たちのー族がおった彼らは勇気の紋章を司どる

ナイトの一族呼ばれておったのじゃが、7賢者封印行なわれた時、魔族とのたたかいほとんどの者がほろんでしまったのじゃ。そのナイトのー族から勇者が現れるはずなのじゃが

English
Long ago, there was a family/clan who protected the royal family of Hylia. They administer the Seal of Courage.

They were called the Knight Clan, but by the time the Seal of the 7 Sages was completed, most of them were already destroyed in a battle with monsters. The hero is supposed to appear from that Knight Clan...
  • 魔族 means "monster family/clan". I take it here to mean monsters (by race) generally
Japanese
 … よし、リンクよ、お前を信じよう残りの紋章を手に入れるが良い
English
.. Very well then. Link, I believe in you. Go and obtain the rest of the seals.
  • ~が良い means "It would be good if you did ~" or "You should ~”. It is a way to issue a command.

Japanese
それから、これを持って。ワシら賢者のー族に伝わる、お前にやろう
English
And take this with you. I give this, the treasure passed down by us sages (sage family/clan), to you.

Link gets the Pegasus Boots:

Japanese
ペガサスのくつを もらった。Aボタンを一定時間押し続けると、ダッシュで体当たりできる
English
You received the Pegasus Shoes. If you hold the A button for a certain period of time, you can dash and do a ramming attack.

Sahasuraara continues:

Japanese
ハイリア洞くつには何かが住んでるよ。みんなには、ナイショだよ。
English
Something inhabits the cave east of Lake Hylia. It's a secret to everybody.
  • The last sentence "みんなには、ナイショだよ" is a reoccuring quote in the Zelda series. It's a reference to the first Zelda game.

Link speaks to Sahasuraara again following their conversation:

Japanese
ワシの他にも7賢者のしそんの者の目をのがれて姿かくしておるはず。探しなされ。
English
Other than me, there should be another descendant of the 7 sages hiding away from the eyes of those in the castle. Seek him out.

Link can have his fortune told again at this point:

Japanese
くろまによ~んくろまによ~ん

サバクにも賢者のしそんが住んでお~る。

English
It's coming to me now.... In the desert, too, lives a descendant of the seven sages...

Another fortune you can get at this point:

Japanese
くろまによ~んくろまによ~ん

サバクの入口は村に伝わるムドラのをもって開かれ~る。

English
It's coming to me now.... The desert entrance can be opened with a book of Mudora handed down in the village.

Equipped with the Pegasus Shoes, Link can now catch the running man in town:

Japanese
ま、まいった!そのでゼルダ姫をさらったわけかい・・・そんな悪いやつには見えないけどなぁ

とにかく、それだけ足がはやいんだったら、色々 に、体当りしてみるといいかもな・・・。

この村の木には、おとくな 物がひっかかってるみたいだしよ。まあ、ためしてごらん。なっ!

English
I give up! With those legs, did you kidnap the princess? I don't see that kind of bad guy here though...

Anyway, just because your legs are fast, it would be good if you tried doing a ramming attack in various places.

In the trees of this village, it looks like there is beneficial stuff stuck in them. Well, please try it out!

Link speaks with the elder's grandson again:

Japanese
長老のおじいちゃんに会えた?悪いやつらがいなくなれば、おじいちゃんも村へ帰れるのに
English
Did you meet my grandpa the elder? If the bad guys leave, my grandpa can also return.

At the church, Link speaks with the priest again:

Japanese
司祭を倒せば、城の者たちも、正気に戻るかもしれません3つの紋章を集めるのです。
English
When the priest is defeated, the people of the castle will probably return to their normal selves. Collect the three crests.

At the church, Link speaks with princess Zelda again:

Japanese
長老が、してくれた地図頼りに行けば良いわ。迷ったらうらない屋よって
English
The elder left a mark on your map, and it will be good to rely on the mark. If you get lost, go to the fortune teller shop.

Link speaks with the wise man in the desert cave (before getting book of Mudora)

English
My name is Ajinaa. Indeed, something is happening inside the Sacred Realm sealed by the Seven Sages, so it would seem...

Since the time of the first Seven Sages who were descendants of the Hylians, a prophesy has been handed down, telling of the herald of a "Great Catastrophe".

According to that prophesy, it is said that the hero will stand in the desert holding the Book of Mudora.

It is said that if you have the Book of Mudora, you can understand the words of the Hylian people.

It should be in the House of Writings in the village. You better obtain it by all means necessary. That is, if you are the one to become the hero...
  • TODO — Not 100% sure on the translation for the second line. Tried my best but it sure is a tricky one. At least for me...

Link finds the book of Mudora in the library south of Kakariko Village:

Japanese
ムドラのを みつけた!ハイリアのが使った古代文字が、これで読めるぞ!
English
You found the book of Mudora! With this, you can read the ancient letters used by the Hylian people!

Armed with the bow, link can reach the end of the cave south of Lake Hylia. He speaks with the thief there:

Japanese
みんなには、ナイショだよ。
English
It's is a secret to everybody.

Link speaks with the old man in the desert cave:

Japanese
おお、それはムドラの書!

それがあれば、ハイリアの民のコトバがわかるはずですじゃ。

English
Oh~ that is the book of Mudora! If you have that, you should be able to understand the words of the Hylian people.

Link uses the book of Mudora at the Desert Temple entrance:

Japanese
このセキバンの前で念ずるがよい。そなた願い伝わればは開けるであろう・・・。
English
Pray silently before this lithograph. If thy wish is transmitted, the way will open...
  • そなた here is an archaic second person pronoun.

Inside the Desert Temple

Triforce Tile Panel:

Japanese
リンクよ、サハスラーラじゃ

すべての魔物のヤカタおかれた宝は、必ず手に入れるのじゃ

English
Link, it's Sahasuraara. [As for] the treasures left behind in all monster castles, get them without fail.

Link finds the power glove:

Japanese
パワーグラブを 手に入れた!

うでに力がみなぎるぞ。イシだってかつげるぞ!

English
You got the power glove! Power is swelling up in both of your arms. You can even lift rocks!

Link gets the Pendant of Power:

Japanese
『力の紋章』を手に入れた!またひとつ強くなったぞ!さあ、さいごの紋章へ向おう
English
You obtained the Crest of Power! Once again, you've become stronger! Now, head towards the last remaining crest!

If Link gets the Pendant of Power after Pendant of Wisdom:

Japanese
『力の紋章』を手に入れた!やった!3つの紋章がそろった

マスターソードの森へ向おう!

English
You obtained the Crest of Power! You did it! You gathered all three Crests. Head towards the forests of the Master Sword!

End of Second Dungeon to End of Third Dungeon (Tower of Hera)

Link can have his fortune told again:

Japanese
ねあ~ん で~るた~る

マスターソードは、司祭の攻撃するための物ではな~い。

English
It's coming to me now... The master sword is not a thing for attacking the priest's body...

There's a second fortune too at this point:

Japanese
ねあ~ん で~るた~る

山のには、ムーンパールなる宝があ~る。手に入れなされ~

English
The moon pearl treasure is in the tower at the mountains. Do get your hand on it~!
  • ムーンパールなる: ムーンパール is moon pearl. なる nowadays means "to become, to get", but originally, it was a copula, ie about the same meaning as だ・である・です・で御座る…. The 終止形(sentence-ending form) is なり, the 連体形(used for forming relative sentences such as in 立つ人・死ぬ人) is なる, which is used here. Thus, we literally get "a treasure that is a moon pearl". The so-called na-adjectives were formed by attaching なる(or たる) to words (mostly imported from China) and the 〜な of Modern Japanese is a contraction of this なる; for example 聖なる, which is still used today. ムーンパールなる is therefore a "moon-pearl-y treasure (chest)."

Wise man in desert cave (after getting second crest):

Japanese
1つ、しれんのりこえて大きくなられた様ですな。頼もしいかぎりですじゃ。
English
TODO — Missing text

Area SE of desert. Thief in cave under large stone:

Japanese
ハイリア湖の東の洞くつには何かが住んでるよ。みんなには、ナイショだよ。
English
Something lives in the cave east of Lake Hylia. It's a secret to everybody.

Link gets the ice rod in the cave east of Lake Hylia:

Japanese
アイスロッドを みつけた!するどい冷気が、空気さく。魔法メーターには気を付けろ!
English
You found the ice rod! A sharp chill cuts the air. Watch your magic meter!

Thief in cave under large rock by the entrance of the east cave of Lake Hylia:

Japanese
とまったやっつけるとルピーがよくでるよ。みんなには、ナイショだよ。
English
If you finish of stunned enemies, rupees often come out of them. It's a secret to everyone.

Link can now visit the medicine shop and receive the magic powder:

Japanese
これが 魔法のだ!敵や 色々な物にふりかけてみよう!
English
This is magic powder! Try sprinkling it on enemies and various things.

The old woman outside the medicine shop now says:

By the way, long ago there was a child in this village who could talk to the animals with an ocarina.

That child traveled the all over the country by using a chicken. That ocarina sure possesses a wondrous power.

Link sprinkles magic power on the cucco under the pot in the leftmost house in the second row in Kakariko Village. It turns into a woman!

Japanese

Link meets a lost old man on the way to the Mt. Hebra summit:

Japanese

English
I don't know who you are, but if you intend to go to the mountains, couldn't you take me with you? [You see,] I've lost my lamp.

The lost old man continues...

Japanese
あぁ 足もと気を付けなされ

が開いておるでな。 そこをへ行ってくださらんか お若いの、あんたやっぱり『黄金の力』を求めて 山へ行かれるのか? この先は魔物の山じゃ。 たくさんの男達が『黄金の力』を求め この山で消えていった 悪いことは言わん。あんたも深入りせんことじゃて…。

English
Ahh, please watch where you going.

There are open holes. Right here, go right. You're a young one. I bet, you too did come to the mountain in search of the Golden Power, right? Beyond this point the monster-mountain starts. Alot of men vanished in those mountains in search of the Golden Power.

Not to mention all the other bad things. Don't you get tangled up into these things too...

Approach a pot:

Japanese
おぉ、そのツボの中にはハートが入っとるはずじゃ。
English
Ohh, there should be a heart inside this jar.

The lost old man continues...

Japanese
おぉ ここを右じゃ … …

ワシにもなあ、あんたくらいまご娘がいてのう…。 国王に お城に連れて行かれて戻ってこぬ… イケニエなどきっと司祭のたくらみじゃ! 魔法陣を封じた7賢者の力をうけつぐ娘たちを捕えて、その力をりようするつもりじゃ。

English
Oh, here turn right... I too have a granddaughter who is about your age. The king took her to the castle and she hasn't returned since... This sacrifice thing is surely some kind of intrigue planned by the priest! He captures the maidens who inherit the power of the Seven Sages who sealed the Magic Plates and intends to utilize that power.
  • The "Magic Plates" he refers to are most likely the square shaped portals to the Dark World which start to appear in the mountains for the first time.

The old man continues in front of his house at the summit: {{ja-en |イケニエにされた娘は、今もどこか生きておる。それを救う『勇者』が現れる時をワシは信じてまっておる…。 おっ、つい話こんで<span class="gloss" title="しまう[関西弁] Kansai dialect}の年よりに色々と ありがとう。 おお、そうじゃ。もし魔法陣に迷いこんだ時は、このカガミにあんたの 姿をうつしなさい。 ">しもうた

  • うつしなさい can either mean 映す or 移す. Both would be true, as the mirror obviously will reflect your image, but also changes Link form back to his normal self while leaving the Dark World.

Link gets the magic mirror:

Japanese
マジカルミラーを もらった!青く すんだ 美しいカガミ…

すい込まれそうな気がしてくる

English
You've received the Magical Mirror! The clear blue mirror... It feels like you'll be sucked right in.

Link speaks with the old man at his mountain home:

You must climb spectacle rock.

If you do that, you will finally arrive at Hebra Mountain's Tower of Hera. Consider it well.

After stepping through the portal, Link meets a horned demon atop Mt. Hebra:

Japanese

English

The person who has that jewel, when they come into contact with the demon's world's power, their form will not change and be protected.

At the church, the priest and princess Zelda have new things to say to Link:

Japanese

Now, please bring the three crests to the forest. The Master Sword is waiting.

Zelda

Japanese

English
Great! Link... As I thought, you have to become the Hero with the power you were hiding! All that's left is to get the master sword! All right! If it's you, can win against the priest!

Link can visit Sahasuraara at the eastern temple:

Japanese

お前が まことの勇者ならば 剣の方で お前を選ぶであろう

English
Hmm, you finally have all three crests... Good, now go to the lost forest. If you are truly the hero, the way of the sword will choose you.

However, it won't go this way.

しかし、今では魔族はびこる言わば、闇の世界じゃ。 司祭は、封印をとき城の入口に闇世界とこちら側を結ぶ通り道を開いてしまったようじゃ。 再び、こちらの世界を救うには『黄金の力』をとり戻すしか 道は残されておらぬ!

English
Link, can you hear my (Sahasrahla's) voice? The (place) you are standing now is a world that was once called the holy land.

But now monsters overrun it. It is a World of Darkness, so to speak. It appears that the priest unraveled the seal and opened a path connecting our side to the World of Darkness at the castle entrance.

Once again, the only path remaining to save this world is to bring back the Golden Power.
  • ~しか~ない means "only". ~しか道は残されていない = "only path that remains". Literally, "there remains nothing except this path/way".

English
Save the 7 maidens. The power of those maidens, who carry the blood of the 7 sages, will surely be useful!

Each of the maidens is confined/sealed in the hideouts of monsters. First, head for the Temple of Darkness! The one we can depend on is you alone.

Please grant/fulfill my (this Sahasralah's) wish. I'm counting on you Link.
  • 血をひく means that you are blood-related, ie your veins run with the same blood.
  • 役に立つ is an idiomatic phrase that means "to be useful"
  • かくれが means "hidout" or "lurking place"
  • 向かう means to face a direction. Here "head for".
  • 頼む literally means "to ask" or "to request (some service or favor)". It's commonly used to mean "I'm counting on you"

I too came here with my eyes dazzled by greed. Every person like that became a monster.

In order to return this world to the holy land it once was, you have to defeat that person and appropriate the power of gold.

That is the only way.... Until then, I plan to wait in this form.

  • ね is a somewhat rare alternate reading of 音. You can also find it in 初音ミク (Hatsune Miku). 色 means color, thus 音色 is tone color.
  • あった is the past of 有る - to be. Literally, "Oh, the ocarina was there [where you found it and now you brought it so it is not there anymore.]" When using kanji, 在る describes the pure existence, while 有る emphasizes existing at a certain location/place. 或る is only used in the meanings of ある時・或る山 etc, as well as for 或いは. At the time the seven sages sealed the path to the dark world, the ones who protected them from monster attacks were...

the family of knights. At that time, I heard the knights fought and their lineage almost died out but.... Probably, you are the last one of their bloodline.

That the last person [of their line] had the hidden power to become a hero, what a miraculous thing.

If it's you, surely you can defeat Ganon!

Welcome, Link.... I am the spirit of the Triforce.

The Triforce is the "power of gold" given by god. The wish in the heart of the person who touches it will be granted.

If a person with a correct heart touches it, a correct wish... if a person with an evil heart touches it, an evil wish [will be granted]....

That person's wish, if it is strong, to the extent that it is strong, the Triforce will display that power.

Ganon's wish was to hold the world in his hand. That evil wish changed the holy land into the world of darkness.

From there, Ganon who was storing power, planned to appear in the world of light.

But, now that Ganon who touched the Triforce is defeated, even world of darkness will begin to disappear.

The Triforce is waiting for a new possessor. The "power of gold" is yours.

Now, touch it. With the wish in your heart...
