The Great Deku Tree:[edit]

Japanese
ハイラル王国に広がる深き森…
English
In the kingdom of Hyrule in a deep, spreading forest...
Japanese
その森を守り続けてきたワシを人はデクの樹と呼んでおった…
English
I, who continues to protect this forest, am called the Deku Tree.
  • 守り続けて Means "continuing to protect" or "keep on protecting" You can use 続ける in any verb, just take off the ます stem of the verb and add 続ける. 食べ続ける "Keep on eating", 読み続ける "Continuing to read".
  • おった is the past form of おる, which is the modest form of いる
  • 樹 is pronounced, and mean, the same as 木. 樹 is being used to elevate the Deku Tree, similar to the word great tacked on in the English version. He's not any old 木 but a 樹.
Japanese
この森にはコキリ族という者たちが住んでおる.
English
In this forest lives a tribe called the Kokiri.
  • コキリ族と云(い)う者たち means the people who are called the kokiri. と云(い)う can be used between nouns to explain the name of the noun, like so "レッドロブスターと云うレストランに行きました。" "I went to the restaurant called Red Lobster".
Japanese
彼らはそれぞれ自分だけの妖精を持っておった
English
Each one has their own fairy.
Japanese
じゃが…たったひとりだけ妖精を持たぬ少年がおったのじゃ…
English
But.. There is one boy who does not have a fairy...
  • じゃ is "slang" for だ. Apparently, じゃ is stereotypical elderly talk, and is not common outside of anime and video games.
  • 持たぬ is olden version of 持たない
Japanese
ナビィ…

妖精ナビィ、どこじゃ… ここへおいで…

English
Navi

Fairy Navi, where are you...

Come here...
Japanese
おぉ、妖精ナビィ…
English
Ooh, Fairy Navi...
Japanese
このワシの…デクの樹の言葉を聞いておくれ
English
Listen to my... to the Deku's Tree's words.
  • 言葉 can be translated as language, words or dialect. It is easily seen by context that 言葉 means words.
Japanese
お前も感じておろう?
English
Do you feel it too?
  • おる (居る) after the て form of a verb indicates continuing action or state. おろう expresses probability (similar to だろう). I would suggest as a translation: "You probably feel it?" or "You are probably feeling it?"
Japanese
この世に満ちた悪しき力を…
English
Evil power is filling this world.
Japanese
今、ハイラルはその力に飲み込まれようとしておる…
English
Now, This power is trying to appear in Hyrule...
Japanese
このコキリの森は、命の源…
English
This forest of the Kokiris, it is the source of life...
Japanese
人の侵入をこばむことで外の世界をも守ってきた…
English
By rejecting the people's invasion, the outside world is also protected...

Japanese
しかし…
English
However...
Japanese
この強大な悪しき力の前では今のワシはまったくの無力…
English
Before this mighty evil power, I am now completely powerless...
Japanese
どうやらあの妖精を持たぬ子が立たねばならぬ時がきたようじゃ。
English
It appears the time has come for that fairyless child to rise.
Japanese
あの子こそ、このハイラルを善き方向へみちびく者…
English
That child alone shall be the one to lead Hyrule to a better path...
  • みちびく is 導く, "to guide, to lead, to show the way." Note that the kanji is made up of "way, street" along with 寸 (the latter probably does not add to the meaning in this case.)
Japanese
さあ、ナビィよ…
English
Now, Navi.
Japanese
あの子をここへいざなうのじゃ…
English
Call that child here.
Japanese
ワシに残された時はもう…多くはない…
English
My time is almost..there is not much left.

Japanese
たのんだぞ
English
I am counting on you.
